The Holy Grail of Knot-Tying References
2017-06-25
"Throughout my 40-year career as a full-time outdoor writer/photojournalist I have written, photographed and illustrated dozens of 'how-to' magazine stories, feature sidebars and columns relevant to the tying and application of the great many specialized knots essential to fishing, boating, camping and more. My peers and I have wistfully imagined an app like this for decades. Now that it's a reality, it's all that we hoped it to be and more. The variable-speed animated illustrations portray a formerly challenging process with a clarity that is far above and beyond anything I and my friends in the outdoor press could ever have visualized. Five stars and an appreciative tip of the old fishing cap to those who conceptualized and created this innovative, easy-to-use game-changer of an app."

"One of the app's greatest strengths lies in its intelligent categorization of knots. For my own activities, specifically camping and nautical pursuits, the app's curated sections make it incredibly easy to discover new and relevant knots. Beyond just showing how to tie a knot, Knots 3D provides detailed use cases and practical applications, explaining why a particular knot is useful in daily scenarios or seasonal activities. This contextual information transforms it from a simple reference tool."

"A+ for the selection and the way the visualization can be manipulated, seeing it from all sides and slowing it down or scrubbing back and forth. Knots have many a names so there's times where I'll have to search the internet for its other names before I find it in the app, but they are definitely all in the app. It helps me to familiarize myself with photos or videos of the knots in the real world on the web but then it's indispensable having the app in the field as a resource to 'remind' myself how the knot is tied. But learning is a worthy endeavor and you won't believe how often you can use knots more functional than a square knot around the house. I used a simple constructor knot to tie yard scraps up using an ivy vine I pulled from the pile of sticks and blew my neighbors mind."

"After a few weeks of using this program daily I continue to marvel at how much it has facilitated my use of cordage in the field. There have been so many times where I want to try a new approach, only to forget how to execute a new knot, bend or loop. Now I have a way of trying something new because of ability to visualize. This is actually a 4d program because the author lets you easily move forward and backward in time as you watch the tying procedure. You can stop at any point, rotate the back side of the knot into view, and see the big picture. This app allows me to *quickly* visualize a new knot, even if I am deep in the bush. Of course, one cannot depend on their smart device being available, so it is a nice-to-have. But, in terms of expanding one's repository of techniques, there is no app or printed reference I have found that uses such a unique way of visualizing the execution of a knot, etc. That the author also concisely explains both intermediate and advanced details of a particular knot, and compares it to other similar classes, broadens my perspective and helps with choosing the correct knot and approach. This is a new app. I can't wait to see the program expand in the future."

Great!

"As a former Boy Scout, sailor and someone who has spent a lot of time thinking about how to teach people how to tie knots, this is a truly great tool for learning and teaching knots. You can see the knot from every angle. The animations are clear and the speed can be controlled. The color choices make the illustrations very clear. You can also view static images of the animations by moving your finger left and right across the image. I especially appreciate the accompanying history, uses, related knots and safety precautions. They are clear and concise. It’s a lot easier to learn to tie knots using this app than it is using Ashley’s Book of Knots. I have recommended it to my friends, family and anyone who expresses an interest in knot-tying."

My go-to for knots

"I have many knot books, including the Ashley Book of Knots, but this app is what I always go to. It has most every knot I need and the library is constantly expanding. The animations are simple, detailed, and easy to follow. One of the most important things for me about this app is that I can use it offline, so when I am out fishing or hunting with no signal, I still have my library of knots."
